1) The first thing you will want to do is clean your home like it has never been cleaned before. From top to bottom, inside and out. Dusting baseboards, cleaning windows, wiping down doors, trim, walls, etc. This would include cleaning out cupboards and closets. After all potential buyers are going to look in all these places when viewing the home. They need to know that their "stuff" will fit in them too. So if your items don't fit what do you think the buyers are going to think? You won't impress buyers with dirty clothes laying on the floor, kitchen counters covered with dirty dishes. Clean! Clean! Clean!

2) You may have to delete some things and clear away some clutter. Potential buyers do not want to see for example your collection of porcelain plates no matter how lovely they may be. Start the packing process and put these types of collections away.

3) Make good decisions about furniture placement to highlight your home's focal points and establish easy traffic patterns. For example, if you have a beautiful fireplace make sure buyers can see it. Don't have it covered with furniture and toys. The furniture needs to be placed to highlight such features. Another reason to rearrange or edit your furnishings is to allow buyers, that are walking through your property, ample space to walk around the rooms without bumping in to your furniture. You also want your rooms to feel spacious not crowded and overstuffed.

4) If your home has bright colors on the walls paint them. Most buyers like to move in to a home that is "move in ready" because they generally take about a year before they start to redecorate to suit their needs. In the mean time they want a home they can live in without feeling pressured to start making changes right away. These bright colors may suit you and your personality, but, they won't suit everyone! Therefore, you could be limiting the number of prospective buyers that your home will appeal to. Painting is one of the top improvements that buyers look for.
